Our Equality Commitments & The Public Sector Equality Duty

At Bosham Primary school we celebrate diversity and promote equality. We recognise that we are all different and the contributions of all children and adults are seen, heard and valued. We enjoy our differences and enjoy learning about our varied experiences. We encourage one another to challenge our assumptions.

We aim to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural differences. We will tackle the barriers which could lead to unequal outcomes and ensure equality of access for all stakeholders. We will always treat people fairly and consistently. We will treat all allegations of discrimination seriously.

We welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010. The school's general duties with regard to equality are:

Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010.
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

Bosham primary school is a one-form small village primary school.

6% of our pupils are eligible for pupil premium, which is lower than the national average of 24%. A priority for our school is determined to narrow the gap between their outcomes and the rest of the school. This is a key part of our school development plan.
4% of our pupils are identified as having English as an additional language, which is lower than the national average of 21%. Some of the languages spoken are Polish, Spanish, Romanian and Afrikaans. The majority language spokwen, for our english as an additional language families is Polish.
86% of our cohort of pupils come from a White British background. The next largest group of pupils come from the any other White Background then a Black African background. This highlights the importance of creating an inclusive, welcoming environment for all.

The profile of equality and diversity at Bosham is something that is really important to us as a school. We proactively design our curriculum to be inclusive and give our pupils exposure to all different types of backgrounds and experiences. We want to prepare the children at our school to be active and considerate members of a wonderfully diverse world. We listen to all of our pupils and work closely with the young governors to ensure we are inclusive.

Our libraries, curriculum and assemblies provide pupils at Bosham with a diverse diet of authors, cultures, religions and role models from all backgrounds. It is essential that children's learning is not limited to what they already know, as we want them to approach their learning open-minded and with an acceptance of others.

Bosham Primary School is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth.

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

The information provided here aims to demonstrate that we give careful consideration to equality issues in everything that we do at Bosham Primary School. ‘Due regard’ ensures that we work towards eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act.

We eliminate discrimination by:

Ensuring that all children feel safe at school and addressed any form of bullying
Reporting, responding to and monitoring all racist incidents
Regularly monitoring the curriculum to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of our pupils and that it promotes respect for diversity and challenges negative stereotyping
Teaching is of the highest quality to ensure children reach their potential and all pupils are given equal entitlement to success
